Breast Augmentation

Breast AugmentationBreast Augmentation (Breast Enlargement)
Have you always wanted larger, fuller breasts? If you are like many women, you may feel that your breasts are disproportionately small and out of balance with the rest of your body. Or maybe your breasts are slightly different sizes, creating a noticeable asymmetry. You can’t control your genetics, but you can have a more curvaceous appearance through breast enlargement surgery.
Many women consider undergoing breast enlargement surgery to enhance the size and shape of the natural bustline. Breast enlargement surgery is also commonly used to restore a breast that has been removed or disfigured as a result of a mastectomy. A feminine body image is important to many women, and that includes the appearance of the breasts. In fact, breast implants come in a variety of sizes, shapes and profiles to achieve a natural-looking physique. Other important features include the texture of an implant’s shell and the substance that fills the shell which impact the look and feel of a breast implant and affect the overall appearance of your breasts.

Breast Enlargement (Augmentation) addresses a lack of or loss of volume in the breasts of women due to childbirth, aging and/or genetic predisposition and in turn improves self-image, boosting self-confidence and personal comfort and satisfaction

Saline or Silicone Breast Implants

There are two types of implants available, these being Saline or Silicone. Both saline and silicone implants have been used since the 1960s.

The advantage of silicone gel implants is primarily aesthetic: they look and feel so soft and natural that they typically cannot be distinguished from breasts without implants provided they do not develop a capsular contracture. They also have a lower rate of rippling and wrinkling. Hence, thin women with modest breast tissue may choose the option of having them placed over the muscle without sacrificing aesthetics. If the same women chose saline implants, they would most likely be advised to have them placed in the subpectoral plane to reduce the risk of rippling. Also, because silicone is lighter than saline, the risk of downward displacement due to gravity is lower. There are disadvantages of silicone gel breast implants. They require a longer scar, the longer scar is necessary as silicone gel implants are pre-filled by the manufacturer, so they must be able to fit through the incision. In general, larger implants require longer scars. Also, the risk of capsular contracture may be slightly higher with silicone.

Saline implants have different advantages than silicone. Saline implants have a presumed (studies currently are underway) lower rate of revision surgery than silicone gel, as saline implants tend to get early capsular contractures, if any, rather than both early and late. Hence, the overall rate of capsular contracture is lower for saline than silicone. Further, the scar is shorter, as saline implants can be filled after they are placed, allowing a smaller incision. The primary disadvantage of saline implants is that they tend to look round and feel stiff and unnatural, particularly in thin women with modest breast tissue. Further, large saline implants have a higher rate of downward displacement than silicone, as they are simply heavier than their silicone counterparts.

Your Breast Augmentation Consultation
During the initial consultation, We will take a thorough history and discuss with you what your specific desires and concerns are. We will take measurements and go through the various decisions that the two of you will make together. Namely, where to place the incision, whether to put the implant behind or in front of the muscle, which type of implant to use, which shape to use and most important, what size is best suited for you. We will then go over the risks of surgery, and what issues might pertain specifically to you.
Many patients will return for a second complimentary preoperative visit. At that time, the final implants will be chosen, photographs will be taken, the paperwork for the surgery center and prescriptions given, and any remaining payment or scheduling issues clarified. This is also a good opportunity to ask us any remaining questions about the surgery. Patients are encouraged to bring their spouses, significant other, or close friend to this visit.

Preparing for surgery
You will be told which medications to stop and which to take before surgery. Aspirin and anti-inflammatory medications must be stopped for 7 days before surgery. If you smoke, you must quit smoking entirely for 6 weeks before and 6 weeks after surgery. You must strictly follow the instructions about when to start fasting before surgery (usually at midnight). If you get sick or have any health issues in the days before surgery, please notify the office at once in case we have to postpone your operation.

The Surgery
The surgery usually takes 1-2 hours to complete. If a breast lift is also performed an additional 60-90 minutes is required. The method of inserting and positioning your implant will depend on your desires, your anatomy and the implant you and your surgeon have chosen.
The breast implant is placed in a pocket created either directly behind the breast tissue or underneath your chest wall muscle (the pectoral muscle). Each option has its own advantages and disadvantages, and you should discuss these options with your surgeon before surgery.

Recovery from Breast Augmentation
You will go home in an elastic bra which helps hold the breasts in the correct position. Initial discomfort is controlled with oral medication, and you should be able to return to work within 7 days. Light activities can be resumed as tolerated, and aerobic activities can be started in about 3 weeks. Moving or sliding the implants within the breast pockets during the postoperative period may reduce the frequency of wrinkling.
After your recovery is complete, your only complaint will be that you didn’t have breast enlargement sooner. If you’re like most women, you will feel more self-confident, sexier, and more attractive than ever before.
